Law enforcement in Sacramento are examining a shooting that broke out on April 18 2026 at the Howe Community Park area at the time officers were shutting down a large unauthorized gathering of multiple hundreds of people.
How It Started
Sacramento County law enforcement initially got calls about the Arden-Arcade park at approximately 6:30 PM on April 18 after obtaining information of subjects reportedly carrying hidden weapons. Shortly after, additional information came in about a potential altercation taking place near the park.
A law enforcement helicopter conducted an aerial sweep but was unable to locate the reported altercation. However, it was apparent that a crowd of several hundred had congregated at Howe Park without permission.
When the Shots Rang Out
Deputies moved to clear the area by surrounding the park and making announcements instructing the hundreds present to vacate the area. Around 15 minutes were allotted for individuals to vacate.
While deputies worked to disperse the gathering that 20 to 25 gunshots rang out. The sudden gunfire sent the crowd running in all directions. Responding personnel immediately began finding those who had been shot.
Those Who Were Hit
In total, four victims were identified as having gunshot wounds. Those injured — including a female and three males all believed to be in their twenties — were taken to Sacramento area hospitals. Medical teams noted that two victims were in serious condition, one of the four had moderate gunshot wounds, and one victim's wounds were minor. In a positive development, each of the four victims was Arden Arcade Sacramento crime 2026 stable.
The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Department also responded and aided in treating the four victims at the park.
Evidence at the Scene
Most of the gunfire seemed to have unfolded along the Cottage Way side of the park near the local Home Depot on the 2200 Howe Avenue block. Detectives discovered extra shell casings throughout the Cottage Way area. Bullet damage were discovered in the wrought iron perimeter fencing bordering the Home Depot store. This ballistic evidence confirmed that at least one of the shooters had been sending rounds south from the Cottage Way area aimed at the Home Depot. The nearby Home Depot was secured under a brief lockdown for a period of time. Forensic investigators and law enforcement detectives worked tirelessly late into the evening.
Detainees in Solano County
Intelligence received over scanner radio traffic showed that a Kia was contacted by law enforcement in Solano County California. Four detainees were taken into custody. Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies were sent to retrieve the detainees to pick up those detained for investigation. Video that was reviewed revealed that the shooting involved two separate gunmen.
